You will see that as the school year continues, we keep building on topics, which is a lifesaver when you’re trying to plan.
And it’s not just vocab and grammar. Those are in there, of course. But this month gives us so many things to work with…
For example, your Spanish 1 students will be working on a lesson on verbs TENER, COMER, ESTAR, and HAY to talk about food. 🍽️
But then, you complete the lesson with the song 🎵🍫 Chocolate by Jesse & Joy which has many activities to choose from, and it is also a hit during Valentine’s Day.
For the cultural aspect of Black History Month, you have suggestions to introduce some Afro-Latino figures too, like Celia Cruz 👑 and Bruno Mars, with biographical presentations that go a little deeper beyond just knowing the names, to explore what these figures did.
In Spanish 2, we’re talking preterite, imperfect, and stem-changing verbs with themes like vacations, natural disasters, heroes, and even watching TV!
After all that, you can end the month in celebration mode with an activity on Uruguay’s carnival that is apparently the longest in the world. 🎉
Plus, among the Afro-Latino personalities, you can feature Zoe Saldaña for the sci-fi fans and Don Omar if they’re into reggaeton.
Moving into the higher levels, Spanish 3 lessons get more “sophisticated.” We are now entering the subjunctive mood with topics like Mayan archaeology 🏺, Greek myths 🏛️, and Spanish history. And the Afro-Latino figures continue more literary and political this time, with Julia Burgos and Felipe Luciano, for example.
For AP Spanish, we are starting the unit on 📱📡Tecnología and how science and tech impact different communities, even indigenous populations, which they will find very interesting.
These lessons will get them thinking critically and really tie into that whole idea of intercultural competence, which is huge these days. Not just knowing the words, but understanding the context, the impact. It’s about communication, but also about being aware of the world around you.
In February, we are trying to go beyond just the basics with the lesson plans by bringing in culture and history to get the students to think deeply.
Ask them to do their own research, find new voices and new perspectives.
And while there’s always room for tweaking and adapting, I think the repertoire of activities is strong for sure.
And that’s what’s so exciting about this selection of resources: they give you a starting point, but it’s up to you to make it your own by bringing your passion and expertise. ✨
What will you do with these plans? What will your students create?
