The words cultivar, crecer, and madurar all mean to grow in Spanish but are used in different contexts. Let’s take a look.
• Cultivar is used for plants.
For example, “En mi jardín, cultivo tomates, albahaca y cebollas” translates to “In my garden, I grow tomatoes, basil, and onions.”
• Crecer, on the other hand, means to grow up, in a physical sense.
For example, “Cada vez que veo mis parientes, dicen ¡Mira cuánto has crecido!“ translates to “Every time I see my relatives, they say Look how much you have grown!”
• Madurar also means to grow up, but in a mental sense.
For example, “El creció mucho en los últimos meses, pero no maduró.” translates to “He grew a lot in the last few months but he hasn’t matured.”
